Kings' Kopitar & Doughty Both Take Home Hardware At NHL Awards In Vegas

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The best players in the NHL gathered in Las Vegas Wednesday night for the annual NHL award ceremony to honor the best performances of the 2015-16 season.

The Los Angeles Kings' Anze Kopitar - who was unable to attend the event - and Drew Doughty represented the team at the award ceremony, and each took home some hardware.

Kopitar, the Kings' newest captain, came away with a pair of trophies, winning both the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded annually to "the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game", and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, presented to the player "adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability."

Edging out Boston Bruins' Patrice Bergeron and Anaheim Ducks' Ryan Kesler for the Selke, and Florida Panthers' Aleksander Barkov and Bruins' Loui Eriksson helped Kopitar win his first pair of league trophies in his 10-year career with the Kings.

Luc Robitaille accepted the Selke in Kopitar's absence.

Kings' defenseman Doughty, who was a finalist twice for the Norris Trophy, finally walked away from the award ceremony a winner.

The Norris is given annually to "the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position."

Doughty became the first King to win a Norris since Rob Blake back in 1998, and is the second King ever to do so.

Voting for this award was very close, but the Kings' defender was able to sneak past Senators' Erik Karlsson by a little over 200 votes.

To add to a night full of accolades for the L.A. teammates, Doughty was also named a First Team All-Star, joining Erik Karlsson, Jamie Benn, Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby and Braden Holtby.
