Kings Edge Freezers 5-4 In Trip Through Germany

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) -- Offseason signing Ethan Moreau scored in the third period to give the Los Angeles Kings a 5-4 exhibition win over the Hamburg Freezers on Tuesday.

Justin Williams got the Kings off to a flying start when he scored with the game's first shot in the first minute.

Serge Aubin equalized on a power play but Alec Martinez replied immediately for the visitors before Hamburg's Kevin Schmidt scored to leave it 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Aubin put Hamburg ahead in the 32nd minute, before Anze Kopitar and Brad Richardson put Los Angeles back in front ahead of the second interval.

Hamburg's Canadian forward Brendan Brooks gave the home fans reason to cheer with 29 seconds remaining when he shot to the top right corner for a late consolation after Moreau -- another Canadian -- gave the Kings a two-goal cushion on a rebound.

Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, who agreed a long-term deal before leaving for Europe, was happy after finally making his season debut.

"I'm ready to go," Doughty told the NHL's website. "I can't wait for the start of the season. That is the game we all look forward to."

The Kings' regular season begins with games against the New York Rangers in Stockholm on Friday, and the Buffalo Sabres in Berlin on Saturday.

"We have had a pretty long preseason and a pretty heavy workload here for the past three weeks," Kings forward Dustin Brown said. "It's been too long. Guys want to play in a real game. Preseason is exactly that -- preseason. Now we are ready to jack up the intensity and play a real game where every little detail counts."
