Kershaw's Historic Streak Earns Him NL Pitcher Of The Month Honors
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw has been named the National League Pitcher of the Month for his historic July efforts.
Kershaw, who is the reigning National League Cy Young and MVP winner, went 3-0 in July with a 0.27 ERA, having given up a single earned run through 33 innings pitched. He also ranked second in the league in strikeouts, with 50.
Opponents were held to a .162 batting average, which marks the fourth lowest in the league for the month of July. Kershaw has not allowed an earned run since July 3rd, and currently owns a 37.0-inning scoreless streak.
That streak includes three straight starts in which he struck out 10 or more batters without having given up a single walk, becoming the first Major Leaguer to do so in the modern era (since 1900).
The last pitcher to do so through two starts in consecutive outings was Cy Young for the Boston Americans in 1905.
Teammate Zack Greinke also received votes, having gone 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA through 38.0 innings pitched and tacking on 34 strikeouts.
