Katy Perry Shuts Down Hollywood Boulevard To Promote New Film

HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — Two young women waiting in the hot sun Tuesday to see pop star Katy Perry perform had to be taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, authorities reported.

The singer shut down Hollywood Boulevard and put on a free show for fans to promote the release of her new film "Katy Perry: Part of Me," which hits theaters July 5.

Even Perry remarked on the heat while walking down the "pink" carpet: "Hello everyone that is watching from home -- do not go outside, it is so hot!"

The women were among 23 people who complained of heat-related illness -- after having stood in the sun for hours in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, L.A. Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey said. Both of the women hospitalized did not have non-life threatening illness, he said.

Perry performed a 30-minute set for thousands of fans. She wore a characteristically over-the-top outfit -- purple hair and a dress with two glittery rolls of film reel on each side of her chest.

The 27-year-old talked with CBS2 about how quickly her life has transformed over the past few years. While musing on the fact that her concert had shut down Hollywood Blvd., the pop star said, "It's very strange, because I remember only about four..five years ago I was calling my 16-year-old brother to borrow $20 from him because I couldn't eat...so it's very surreal."

"I think they'll be surprised for how much I let them see," said Perry of how she thinks fans will react to the film.

The singer had the film made from footage taken during her "California Dreams" world tour, and it includes scenes where she openly struggles with her break-up from ex-husband Russell Brand.

Perry said, "And I get to show them everyhing, kind of what's behind the curtain. They will really, really know me after seeing this film."
