An underage boy has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing at a protest in downtown Los Angeles earlier this month, according to the LA County District Attorney's Office.

The stabbing happened at one of several demonstrations protesting the Trump administration's immigration policies this month. On the afternoon of Feb. 7, a 17-year-old boy was left in critical condition after being stabbed during protests near City Hall, police said.

Nearly a week later, police announced the arrest of a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of committing the stabbing.

On Thursday, the DA's office announced a felony count of attempted murder was filed against a juvenile in the case. He denied the charge when he faced arraignment during an appearance in Juvenile Court on Feb. 18. His next court date is set for March 7.

"Violence has no place in our public spaces," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement announcing the charge. " We understand that people have the right to express their views, but this right must be exercised with respect for others' safety and well-being. Our support is with the victim and their family as they navigate this difficult time and begin the recovery process."

No other details about the circumstances surrounding the crime have been released by authorities.
