Jury Convicts Trucker Of Involuntary Manslaughter In Runaway Big Rig Deaths
PASADENA (AP) —A Los Angeles County jury has convicted a trucker of involuntary manslaughter but rejected charges of second-degree murder in a runaway truck incident that took the lives of a man and his daughter.
The jury on Friday also convicted Massachusetts resident Marcos Costa of vehicular manslaughter and inflicting great bodily injury on a motorist who survived the accident.
The jurors deadlocked on a great bodily injury allegations involving two other motorists and the judge declared a mistrial on those charges.
Costa was the driver of a big-rig car hauler that lost its brakes on a steep mountain road descending into a Los Angeles foothill suburb in 2009. The rig smashed into cross-traffic and a building.
