Job Pressures Behind Surge In Male Facelifts, Breast Reductions?

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A shaky job market and a less-than-sunny economic outlook may be driving millions of American men to undergo what was once considered almost exclusively for women: cosmetic surgery.

A new report shows a 2 percent jump in U.S. males opting for facelifts, Botox injections and other cosmetic work compared with 2009.

The report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, including both minimally invasive and surgical procedures.

While there's plenty of speculation over the reason for the spike, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif tells KFWB 980's Maggie McKay the pressure to look young apparently affects other men, too — especially those looking for work.

Nassif also points to pressure from wives that have previously undergone some form of cosmetic surgery and encourage their husbands to also have some work done.

According to the society's statistics, between 2009 and 2010 facelifts and ear surgeries jumped the most (11 percent and 9 percent, respectively), while Botox injections (9 percent), liposuction treatments (7 percent) and even male breast reduction (6 percent) all saw significant increases.
