Joan Rivers Remains Hospitalized In NY After Throat Surgery
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Joan Rivers remains hospitalized in New York on Thursday after she reportedly stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest while in surgery.
Police said they received a phone call at 9:30 a.m. after Rivers stopped breathing Thursday morning during a procedure on her throat at the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic. She was immediately rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital.
According to the New York Daily News, Rivers is in a medically induced coma at Mount Sinai Hospital.
KCAL9's Suzanne Marques reported on the 81-year-old's latest condition.
"This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York where she is being attended to," Mount Sinai spokesman Sid Dinsay said in a statement. "Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support."
Rivers' daughter, Melissa, flew out of Los Angeles Thursday morning to be by her mother's side.
Doctors are expecting to bring Rivers out of her coma this weekend and will evaluate the damage caused when she went into cardiac and respiratory arrest, according to the Daily News.
Rivers has documented her life in the reality show "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best?" and gave fans a rare look into her off-stage life through her 2010 film "A Piece of Me."
"So, my stage persona is just, I like to represent all of the women," Rivers said. "My real life is my real life. Hostesses invite me and think 'Oh, Joan will be the life of the party and we will put her at that table'. If I don't know you, I don't talk."
The comedian has also written 12 books. She sat down with KCAL9 in 2012 when her satirical memoir "I Hate Everyone Starting With Me" was banned at Costco.
Rivers was set to perform her stand-up show in New Jersey on Friday, Marques said.
