Jets Blank Kings In Overtime 1-0
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) -- Evander Kane scored the only goal of the game 69 seconds into overtime, and Chris Mason made 31 saves in the Winnipeg Jets' 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
The sold-out arena erupted in cheers when Kane scooped the puck out of goalie Jonathan Bernier's pads and fired it into the net.
Bernier and fellow backup Mason were the stars throughout until Kane won the game. Mason earned his first shutout of the season, and Bernier was the tough-luck loser despite making 26 saves.
The Jets (18-14-5) moved into a tie with Toronto and New Jersey for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
The Kings (18-14-6) haven't lost in regulation since Darryl Sutter took over as coach, going 3-0-2.
The Kings failed on five power plays, and have scored only four power-play goals in their last 17 games.
Both Mason and Bernier were sharp in the first period. The Jets had the better chances, including Blake Wheeler's breakaway. The Kings had four shots on goal during the period's only power play, but Mason turned them away.
Los Angeles had three power plays in the second period, including a two-man advantage for 1:52, but couldn't solve Mason. Dustin Penner deflected a point shot past Mason, but it hit the left post.
Kyle Wellwood had the Jets' best chance of the second period when he hit the crossbar from the slot in the final minute.
The Kings had a 25-17 shots advantage after two periods.
The Jets couldn't beat Bernier during a 46-second, two-man advantage early in the third period.
