Crittenton was arrested Monday night when he tried to board a plane at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
"We received information that he was going to be at the airport on a specific flight. We responded there and took him into custody," Special Agent Scott Garriola said. "There were no incidents, no problems. He didn't give us any issues."
The FBI says Crittenton fatally shot Jullian Jones before fleeing to Southern California.
Police say the intended target was the man standing next to her at the time of the drive-by shooting. Crittenton reportedly believed the man had robbed him of his jewelry last April.
The Lakers drafted Crittenton in 2007. He was later traded to the Memphis Grizzles and went on to play for the Washington Wizards. He hasn't played in the NBA since 2009.
He is expected to appear Wednesday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, according to Jane Robison of the District Attorney's Office.
The FBI says Crittenton could return to Atlanta within the next two weeks to face charges there.
Crittenton's lawyer, Eldridge Suggs, released a statement regarding his client's arrest: " He was never running. He is not guilty. This is a very big surprised to him that he was even charged."
