iPads, Copper Wiring Stolen In San Bernardino School Burglaries
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Authorities were searching for suspects Monday in a recent rash of burglaries at several San Bernardino schools.
Sgt. Stephen Donahue of San Bernardino School District Police said 24 burglaries have been reported in the month of July - the latest coming on Sunday night.
"It's quite concerning to us, especially when people victimize our schools they take money from our kids, which cuts down on their education," Donahue said. "We take this very seriously."
Two dozen schools - both high school and elementary school levels - have been targeted by thieves who have stolen iPads, electronics, tools from construction sites and even gasoline from on-campus vehicles.
Computers and copper wiring from air conditioners have also been stolen by the suspects, Donahue said.
"No one's seen them," he said. "They come usually in the middle of the night and they're in and out rather quickly."
District police are still uncertain of the exact dollar amount for what's been stolen so far, considering some schools haven't even had a chance to report missing items.
By the time classes are back in session on August 5, Weingold reported authorities are hoping having more people around will deter whoever is responsible for these burglaries from striking again.
