International Manhunt For Chicago Murder Suspect Ends With Arrest In Hemet
HEMET (CBS) — The FBI says a man wanted for a 1996 murder in Chicago was arrested in Hemet and is now awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
Giovanni Spiller, 65, was wanted by the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department after he was named a suspect in a 1996 homicide outside a Chicago pool hall. The FBI says a tip led them to Spiller at a home in Hemet, where he was identified and taken into custody on Feb. 21.
Since Spiller became a fugitive in 1997, the FBI has tracked him from Chicago to Memphis and the Philippines, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Spiller had been living in Hemet under the alias of "Johnny Harrington," the Tribune reported, in a 4-bedroom home he and another family bought for $138,000 in 1990. Spiller's wife apparently moved out to Hemet from Chicago about five years ago.
Spiller is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside and is awaiting extradition to Illinois.
