In celebration of Black History Month, we're featuring the stories of Black Cinema and the impact on today's filmmaker.

Regeneration: 1898-1971

On view at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is the exhibit Regeneration: Black Cinema, 1898–1971 which "explores the rich history of Black participation in American cinema from its beginnings to just beyond the civil rights movement. Inspired by and named after an independent all-Black-cast movie from 1923, Regeneration seeks to revive lost or forgotten films, filmmakers, and performers for a contemporary audience."

Taking over 5 years to conceptualize, plan and install, cocurators Doris Berger, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Vice President of Curatorial Affairs, and Rhea L. Combs, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Director of Curatorial Affairs are thrilled to have unearthed creative pieces that help fully tell the story of Black Cinema and inspire today's filmmaker.

Brittney Jannae, Filmmaker

Self-taught filmmaker Brittney Jannae says she's still learning, yet talented enough to be tapped by Sony Pictures to film the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of "The Woman King" featuring an incredible cast led by Viola Davis.

Originally from St. Louis, Jannae made her way to Los Angeles to pursue a dream of documenting people and the world. While she's busy learning and growing, every step of the way she's helping teach others. Her passion to inform people of color what's out there and what's possible in the entertainment industry led her to create a podcast "Crewed Up" (currently in development) to teach how crews work, what professional jobs are available, and brings on guests to give their perspective on the industry and how to succeed. Podcast launches March 2023. Follow her on Instagram @brittney.janae to learn more about the podcast and her filmmaking.
