Injured Anaheim Police Dog 'Doing Well' After Emergency Surgery Overnight
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) – An Anaheim police dog that was seriously injured in a deadly officer-involved shooting was doing well Wednesday after undergoing emergency surgery overnight.
Bruno, a 7-year-old sable German Shepherd and six-year veteran of the Anaheim Police Department, has been recovering at Yorba Regional Animal Hospital following surgery to remove a bullet from his lung.
The dog was injured March 20 when two Anaheim police officers arrived at the intersection of La Palma and Mayfair avenues at approximately 2 p.m. for a parole check.
Bruno "took a serious turn for the worst" Tuesday night and developed a condition called gastric bloat, which caused his stomach to fill with air and twist, according to the animal hospital.
He underwent a two-hour emergency surgery overnight.
"The good news is that this was caught early, but it is still very serious and can be life threatening," the hospital wrote on its Facebook page.
Bruno is expected to make a full recovery.
Just hours before his condition worsened, Bruno was said to be doing well and was even enjoying the outdoors with his handler, RJ Young.
