Industrial Fire Rages Out Of Control In Fontana
FONTANA (CBS) — A fire burning at an industrial complex -- fueled by wooden pallets -- raged Saturday night in Fontana.
The fire has reached at least five alarms, according to authorities. The pallet yard was fully-engulfed, said eyewitnesses.
Drivers on the nearby 10 Freeway have reportedly been rubber-necking to catch the large plumes of smoke and flames.
Reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, Rachel Kim spoke to firefighters who said they made pretty good progress by 10 p.m. Saturday. By that point, the fire had burned for close to five hours.
In addition to the pallet yard, the fire has engulfed 6 acres, three other buildings and tires from a neighboring semi-truck tire company.
Diesel tanks have also been exploding throughout the evening, reports Kim.
A truck yard will also be a total loss, according to officials.
One firefighter was overcome by heat.
The fire reportedly started at Cherry Avenue and Slovner Avenue.
No evacuations have been ordered.
The owner of the pallet yard was too emotional to talk on camera, but told Kim he and his wife started their business nine years ago.
Firefighter Otto Schramm said firefighters were trying to attack the blaze from all sides. "We're trying to get as much waster as we can in there. We have a pretty good perimeter set up in there. We're not expecting this fire to spread to any additional businesses or residences."
