'I'm Still In Shock,' Said Man Whose Unit Was Red-Tagged After Strong Rainfall
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Dozens of Huntington Beach residents are trying to figure out their next move after this weekend's storm caused some of their ceilings, which were under repair, to collapse.
"It was like a faucet coming straight out of your ceiling," said Kurt Klatt, in describing what happened when the torrential rainfall hits the roof in Huntington Beach.
"I dumped 20 gallons of water out the first night that came out of the ceiling," said Klatt, who was not alone, as his apartment was of 32 units rendered uninhabitable.
That included all of the units in one building, and 8 units in a second building. On Sunday night, residents in all 32 units were evacuated.
The Huntington Beach Fire Department says the Casa Del Sol apartment complex has been replacing the roof and placing solar panels on each building; a project that began last February.
The fire department says tarps were placed to protect against the thunderstorms, but they couldn't hold back the driving rain.
Ceilings became drenched and collapsed in many of the units. No injuries were reported, however.
Klatt says building management is negotiating with the roofing company to cover hotel costs for residents of the 32 red-tagged units.
He says the question now is: how long will it take and will his costs be covered?
"I'm still in shock to tell you the truth," he questions.
The apartment management company is not making any comments at this time.
