IE Family Demands Justice After College Football Player Dies In Freeway Shooting
RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — Family members are demanding answers after a star college athlete was gunned down on the 60 Freeway last weekend.
Sheldon Martin, a 20-year-old student and football player at Chaffey College, was killed in a car-to-car shooting east of Valley Way in Rubidoux Saturday night.
Martin's aunt, Vivian Cheeley, recalled saying a routine goodbye to him as he left to go out with friends.
"He was going to a game. And he told me, 'I'll see you later.' That was it," she said.
Martin's mother was too distraught to speak on camera.
Off camera, she told KCAL9's Tom Wait she's just beginning to cope with the reality of her son's death.
Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Police will only say there was an argument at a Baker's restaurant in Riverside Saturday night, and soon after, Martin was hit and killed in a car-to-car shooting along the 60 Freeway.
Two of Martin's friends suffered minor injuries. The killer remains on the loose.
"We're his family. We love him. We're all heartbroken," Cheeley said.
Martin's other family was the Chaffey College football team. His coach, Artie Allen, says the former wide receiver was a standout athlete, and his teammates are grieving his loss.
"It's tough for a lot of us and we're just here right now to support our players and support them as much as possible," Allen said, adding of Martin: "He was ready to go, so that's one thing that stands out – is his focus level that he had when we started fall camp."
Football practice was canceled Monday. Coaches say they wanted to get the team together so they could speak with the players.
The family says they plan to hold a vigil in the near future.
