Roads Reopened After SoCal Storm Moves Out
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The major route between Southern and Central California is reopened after being shut down overnight because of heavy snow and ice from a winter storm that sent temperatures plunging.
The California Highway Patrol began escorting groups of motorists through the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The steep, winding roadway at the 4,160-foot-high Tejon Pass was completely opened about an hour later.
Overnight lows in the area near the Kern County line were in the 20s.
In the Los Angeles basin, temperatures dipped into 30s and caused weather officials to issue a frost advisory for the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.
A dusting of snow fell in Studio City, Altadena, Pasadena Burbank, Santa Clarita and many other areas unaccustomed to seeing flakes.
The skies will be clear for Sunday night's Academy Awards, but the red carpet will likely be chilly.
