Huntington Beach Marks 'Surf, Sun & Celebration' At 4th Of July Parade
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — "Surf, Sun and Celebration" came to Huntington Beach on Thursday.
The city's annual Fourth of July Parade began at 10 a.m. at the Pacific Coast Highway and 8th Street and travels south on PCH to Main Street ending past Yorktown Avenue.
The Huntington Beach Parade has been held since 1904 and is the largest 4th of July Parade west of the Mississippi.
"It's total chaos, total zoo. There will be wall-to-wall people, you won't be able to move," Fountain Valley resident Gordon Bradley said. "They release the pigeons in here before the parade starts and you see the old World War II vets and Vietnam. It's just really patriotic. It's a great to be out here and be in America."
"There are two directors and nine volunteer board members that work year-round to put this on," Stacey Newton told KNX1070.
The Huntington Beach Surf City 5K Run and Fitness Expo began at 6 a.m. at Worthy Park at Main and 17th streets.
A fireworks show will take place at the pier over the water at 9 p.m.
PCH will be closed from Goldenwest Street to Beach Boulevard until at least 2 p.m. when it is expected to reopen until 7 p.m. It will be shut down until traffic has dispersed following the fireworks show. Officials expect to have it completely open by 11 p.m.
