Highland Park Man Keeps Vigil Over Unsolved Murders Of Daughter, Granddaughter
HIGHLAND PARK (CBSLA.com) — Twenty years later, Luis Navarro still agonizes over the murder of his daughter and granddaughter.
Veronica Ultreras, Navarro's oldest daughter, and his first granddaughter, Cynthia, were killed in their Highland Park home in the 800 block of North Avenue. A morning house fire after the New Year in 1993 led to the murder investigation.
"For 20 years and almost two months, I cry," Navarro says. The double murder remains unsolved.
Investigators with LAPD's major crime division say the 22-year-old mother, who worked as a teacher's aide, and her 3-year-old daughter were innocent victims.
Navarro, 68, has filled several briefcases with anything related to the investigation. He continues to make his own flyers and posts them in the neighborhood where the murders occurred.
"I am not going to stop until the criminals are in jail," Navarro says.
Over the years, Navarro has been on hunger strikes and has carried a wood cross engraved with his daughter and granddaughters names to bring attention to the case.
"I hope somebody comes up and says, 'Hey, I know the crime.'"
For now, Navarro's mission continues with weekly rituals to the cemetery and weekly meetings with cold case detectives.
"I'm never going to forget."
