High School Athlete Declared Dead After 8 Days In Medically Induced Coma
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Morgan Wilson, the 17-year-old standout high school athlete who collapsed in an Anaheim park after a run on July 8, has died.
Wilson was in intensive care at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Friends and family kept a constant vigil by her bedside.
Wilson, a star of Esperanza's tennis team, also ran track. By all accounts, she was a fit, healthy and health-conscious young woman. She had a 4.2 GPA and no known health problems.
Wednesday evening, her devastated parents reached out to loved ones and said they believed CPR could have saved her life.
They're hoping her death will lead to new safety guidelines for other students.
KCAL9's Stacey Butler said Wilson's parents were too grief-stricken to talk on camera.
They reached out to friends and family via social media. Her parents thanked all her friends for their support.
They also released a statement that praised their daughter. It said in part: "Morgan never compromised her morals to be part of the crowd."
Wilson was placed in a medically induced coma and died Wednesday.
Her parents made a plea for officials who are around children to know CPR and be prepared to administer it.
"No family should have to go through the loss of a child," they wrote. "The best way to honor Morgan is to learn and encourage others to learn CPR. We believe that Morgan's life could have been saved had CPR been administered in a timely fashion."
Funeral services have not been announced.
