Hesperia Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Abusing Girlfriend's 4-Month-Old Infant

HESPERIA (CBSLA.com) — A 24-year-old man remained in custody Wednesday on suspicion of abusing his girlfriend's 4-month-old son.

On April 8, Tyron Terrell Bookman, of Hesperia, made a 911 call regarding a male infant who had difficulty breathing in his home, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics were sent to the 11300 block of Tamarisk Avenue, and located the infant who was unable to breathe on his own.

The infant was then transported to the Desert Valley Medical Center where officials discovered he had a fractured skull.

According to deputies, the infant was then flown to the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. He remains listed in extremely critical condition, and is in a state of comatose.

Additional tests revealed the infant sustained a fracture to his occipital bone, a complex fracture to his parietal bone, and a hematoma to the outside his brain.

No other injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed Bookman's girlfriend left her son and 3-year-old daughter with him while she ran errands.

Officials explained he allegedly buckled the infant into a car seat, left him in front a television, and struck the left side of his skull multiple times.

The infant's injuries were consistent with inflicted child abuse, detectives added. The assault weapon has not yet been determined.

Bookman is being held on $500,000 at the High Desert Detention Center on suspicion of child abuse causing comatose.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office filed one felony count of child endangerment against him on Tuesday.

Bookman is scheduled to appear in court on April 27.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Crimes Against Children Detail at (909) 387-3615.
