Health Coverage Voided For 10,000 On U.S. Residency
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California's health insurance exchange is moving to cancel coverage for over 10,000 people who failed to prove they are U.S. citizens or legal residents.
Covered California began notifying about 100,000 families in September that they needed to confirm their legal status in the U.S. People living in the country illegally are not eligible for coverage under the federal health law.
The agency said in a statement Monday it is notifying 10,474 people they have not provided adequate information.
For those who did not submit the necessary verification "we are required by law to begin the process of termination," Executive Director Peter Lee said in a statement. "Even for them, we are establishing processes so they can keep their coverage if they demonstrate their legal status."
Nearly 7,000 families remain under review.
In the first open enrollment period under the federal health overhaul, California enrolled 1.4 million people in private health plans, the most of any state.
