Halloween Safety Tips For Kids & Teens

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Safety Expert & Founder of M.A.M.A. Self-Defense, Jarrett Arthur, visited the KCAL9 studios Friday to talk Halloween safety for parents, kids and teens.

For Parents with younger kids:

-Visit scary lawns in the daytime to prep kids
-Take them to a Halloween store so they get used to scary costumes
-Make sure that they can see properly out of their costumes
-Make sure that they won't trip over their costumes
-Get glowsticks and flashlights so that they can see in the dark
-Check all candy in the light once you get home to make sure wrappers aren't tampered with
-Check all candy for ingredients that your child might be allergic to
-Visit the Megan's Law website and note which houses in your neighborhood house registered sex offenders and avoid

For Parents with older kids who will be trick-or-treating with friends:

-Pre-plan a route for your kid and their friends so they know where to go
-If your child is trick-r-treating in a friends neighborhood visit that area to make sure it looks safe
-Visit the Megan's Law website and note which house your child isn't allowed to visit and talk to them about why
-Make sure your child has an emergency plan and a way to get in touch with you in case they get lost or don't feel safe
-Set clear boundaries and rules as to what is allowed and not allowed on Halloween
-Have a conversation about being respectful of other people and their property
-Chat with the parents of your child's friends to make sure everyone is on the same page
-Set a precise pick-up time and place

For Parents with teens:

-Screen your teen's costume to make sure it's not too sexy or provocative
-Talk with your teen about issues related to underage drinking according to your rules
-Make sure your teen has an emergency plan and a way to get in touch with you in case they get lost or don't feel safe
-If your teen is driving, set clear rules and expectations for who is allowed in their car with them
