Hacking Group Takes Credit For Shutting Down Xbox, PlayStation Online Networks
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Gamers who woke up excited Christmas Day to play with their new PlayStations and Xboxes were sorely disappointed to find out that online service was down for the gaming consoles, CBS News reports.
Sony and Microsoft acknowledged that players were unable to sign into the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live:
The issue was first reported Wednesday night and continued into Thursday. The devices' support sites alerted users that their internet services were "limited" or "offline."
A hacking group called Lizard Squad has taken credit for the outages on Twitter. Their involvement is not confirmed.
It's unclear if they're affiliated with Guardians of Peace, the group who claimed responsibility for the hack on Sony in retaliation for the North Korea satire "The Interview."
CBS2/KCAL9's Erica Nochlin spoke with a Southland family who was affected by the hack.
"Kept getting the same screen that says 'Trouble downloading.' 'Trouble downloading.' 'Trouble with the update,'" said Fritz Ebner, who bought an Xbox for his two young sons.
"They just realized that all the new Xboxes got blocked off," Ebner's young son Grayson said
His other son TJ said, "It kind of, like, blows my mind."
