Gun pointed at crowd during wild street takeover in South LA

Suspects Sought In Echo Park Tesla Stunt 02:23

Video showed someone pointing a gun at a crowd during a street takeover in South Los Angeles late Sunday night.

The takeover occurred at about 11 p.m. at the intersection of San Pedro Street and Century Boulevard.

he video shows a man hanging out the side of a white Dodge Charger pointing what appears to be a gun at spectators as the car did donuts in the intersection. No shots were fired.

The video also showed the crowd pointing lasers at the cars, with spectators running into the middle of the intersection.

Los Angeles police responded and eventually broke up the gathering. There were no injuries or arrests.

"The streets look ugly now and most of the people don't live here, they just come from outside and do all this, and we're left here with all the mess," said Debra, who resides in the area, and asked that CBSLA not use her last name.

Debra said the takeovers have been happening once or twice a month since the start of the pandemic.

"They (the police) just show up and blow their sirens and everyone goes their own way," Debra said.

This comes after a stunt went viral on social media showing a rented Tesla jumping a steep intersection in Echo Park in the early morning hours Sunday. The Tesla launched several feet into the air, then hit two parked cars and skidded to a stop. Several suspects then fled, abandoning the car. No arrests have been made in that case.

In January, the L.A. City Council approved $100,000 in funding to pay LAPD officers overtime to support specialized enforcement against street racing in the San Fernando Valley communities of Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Reseda, Winnetka and Canoga Park.
