Grieving Dad Who Lost Son To Leukemia On Quest To Run 700 Miles Through Calif.
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Richard Nares lost a son to leukemia in 2000.
These days he runs the Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) in memory of his son. The operative word being "runs."
Nares recently set out from San Francisco on a 700 mile run to San Diego. He's currently in the LA area and expects to make it to his destination -- Rady's Children's Hospital -- by June 1
Nares says, "More than 12 years ago, I made a promise to Emilio when we saw runners outside his hospital room in Boston -- where he was receiving radiation treatment -- that I would run that city's famous marathon. I've since qualified for the race three times."
ENF helps bring low-income kids to their leukemia and cancer treatments.
"If my son could be so courageous in his fight, then I can and will find the strength to run from San Francisco to San Diego in 30 days so that we can help more families whose children are fighting cancer."
His goal is to raise $125,000.
