Graduating Seniors Remember Irvine High Student Killed In Memorial Day Crash
IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — High school students observed a moment of silence during their graduation ceremony Wednesday in remembrance of a fellow senior who died in a car accident on Memorial Day.
The 446 graduating seniors sat in silence to honor classmate Robin Cabrera, who was killed when the car she was traveling in hit a tree and caught fire on Jamboree Road in Newport Beach.
Three other Irvine High School students were killed in the crash, including Robin Cabrera's 16-year-old sister and two other juniors.
The fifth victim, 17-year-old Abdurlrahman M. Alyahyan, was a senior at University High in Irvine.
Cabrera's mother was helped to the stage to accept her senior daughter's diploma.
"We've been going and dealing with a lot of pain," said Dr. Monica Colunga, the school's principal. "This event today is one more step closer to that healing process."
As students celebrated their achievement, graduate Tensi Cherry said her friend was dearly missed.
"I wish she was still here," said Cherry, who said Cabrera was "amazing."
"She's in here with me, in spirit with me. And I miss her so much."
