Girl Spends Seventh Birthday In Hospital After Riverside Hit-And-Run

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A Riverside girl is spending her seventh birthday in a hospital after sustaining major injuries in a hit-and-run crash.

Deasha Butts, 7, was crossing Iowa Avenue at about 2:28 p.m. Friday when a red truck driving north at about 45 mph hit her and drove away, California Highway Patrol officials said. The truck was last seen turning left on Center Street from Iowa.

Deasha was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center with major injuries, CHP officials said. Deasha's mother said Tuesday was her seventh birthday.

The truck was described as a red 1999-2009 Chevrolet 2500/3500 utility truck, with four doors, storage compartments built into the quarter panels, a utility rack over the bed and chrome front bumpers and rims/wheel covers.

The driver was described as a white man, possibly 40 to 50 years old, with a gray goatee. He was further described as a "stocky" construction worker type, and authorities believe he may live or work in the area.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the California Highway Patrol Riverside area office at (951) 637-8000, or the CHP Inland Division Investigation Service Unit at (909) 428-5400.
