Girl, 16, Dies After Being Shot In The Back Of A Car In South Gate
SOUTH GATE (CBS) — A 16-year-old girl who suffered a gunshot wound to the neck as she sat in the back seat of a car in South Gate died Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The girl died at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood around 4:30 a.m., according to police.
The teen was struck by a bullet that pierced the rear windshield of the sedan in the area of Garfield Avenue and Gardendale Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, emergency response personnel said. The driver tried to reach a hospital but stopped near Magnolia and Alpine avenues in Lynwood, where paramedics responded and took the victim to the hospital.
Perez said the girl and the young man who drove the sedan "were hanging around" the car when a "crew" of older people showed up and some sort of argument erupted. He said it is his understanding that the car was fired on as the victims were trying to get away.
The girl turned 16 on Sunday, and plans were under way to throw her a sweet sixteen party.
