Girl, 14, Fatally Shot While Watching Fireworks In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A teenage girl was fatally shot and two others injured while watching fireworks in front of a South Los Angeles home late Wednesday night.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of West 97th Street at Normandie Avenue near Westmont, Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said.

A group of people were enjoying 4th of July festivities when two men came running down the block and opened fire.

Unique Russell, 14, her 12-year-old female cousin and 21-year-old male cousin were transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, family members said.

Russell was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to officials.

The two other victims were both shot in the leg and are expected to survive.

Sheriff's detectives are trying to determine a motive behind the shooting.

No suspect descriptions were released.

"She was a kid. She had a life in front of her, only 15. They need to turn themselves in, they really do," said Russell's cousin Fenesha McCrosky.

Anyone with information should contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
