Giants Beat Dodgers Split Squad 8-3 In Spring Opener

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Right fielder Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run triple and the San Francisco Giants used back-to-back four-run innings to spoil the spring managerial debut of Don Mattingly and beat a Los Angeles Dodgers split squad 8-3 on Saturday.

Schierholtz's opposite-field triple to left highlighted the first outburst in the third inning.

Third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who dropped 38 pounds over the winter, hit the Giants' first homer of the spring, a two-run shot to right field to provide the spark in the fourth inning. He also drove in a run in the third with a single.

Second baseman Mark DeRosa, whose playing time was limited in 2010 when a second surgery was needed on his injured left wrist, was 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings in his first start for the Giants, giving up four hits, with one strikeout and one walk. He threw 43 pitches.
