Get X-cited for X Games 17

There's still time to take in some extreme, dangerous, don't-try-this-at-home-kids action at the X games at Staples Center.

What are the X Games? They're ESPN's contribution to the world of extreme sports competition. The Summer X Games started in 1995 and feature some of the best Moto, Rally, Skateboarding and BMX athletes in the world. You know, the kind of things your parents said were too crazy to be taken seriously. Guess what, Mr. and Mrs. Your Parents, extreme sports have gone mainstream, and it is serious business.

All of the competitions are held in downtown Los Angeles, most of them at Staples Center, the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, Lot 7 (yes, the actual parking lot, which will probably have a negative impact on actual parking), Event Deck at L.A. LIVE and Gilbert Lindsay Plaza. That's a bunch of extreme in one walkable area.

Events are scheduled from 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Friday, 11:15 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Sunday. (For a complete list of events see below.)

Tickets start at $5, but prices will vary depending on the location. All tickets include admission to the X Fest at L.A. LIVE action sports extravaganza, which features live music, sponsor tents, an interactive skate park, demonstrations and opportunities to meet the athletes. X Fest opens an hour before the events start and closes an hour before the events end.

Friday is "Girl's Day" at X Games and features interactive demos and clinics by female X Games athletes. Also, giveaways! As with most things the kids are doing, there's an app for that.

If you plan to attend X Games 17 (Seriously? I'm old.) please consider that traffic will be altered (i.e., worse than normal) due to street closures. Parking is available along Figueroa St. for $25. You may want to consider public transportation. It's like extreme green.
