The leak, which was described as "major," was reported around 10:05 a.m. at a construction site near Newbury Road and Haigh Road, according to the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD).
The less than 1-inch gas service line was found to have been damaged underground after a backhoe drove over a curb vault, according to the Southern California Gas Company .
About 10 people were evacuated from a neighboring mobile park, fire officials said. Residents in the area were advised to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until the repairs were completed around 2:20 p.m.
California Highway Patrol had initially shut down the southbound 101 Freeway at Ventu Park Road and northbound at Lynn Road, the VCFD said. The closure was lifted about 11:20 a.m.
Newbury Road had also been shut down about a half-mile in both directions.
