Former Marine Sentenced To Life In Prison For Rape, Attempted Murder Of 69-Year-Old Woman
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A former Marine was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the September 2009 rape and attempted murder of a 69-year-old woman.
Gary Devaughn LaBon, 50, was convicted Aug. 30 of one count each of rape, attempted murder and kidnapping for rape. Jurors also found true the allegations of kidnapping during a rape and causing great bodily injury.
LaBon was arrested on Sept. 18, 2009, after police got a call about the 3 a.m. attack on the woman in the 12900 block of Jefferson Avenue. The woman was collecting cans in trash bins at the time of the assault.
LaBon had his hands around her neck when police arrived, and he tried unsuccessfully to run from the scene, Deputy District Attorney Robin Allen said.
The victim -- who had been a "very healthy, active woman" -- suffered traumatic brain damage and her injuries have left her unable to walk, talk, feed herself or sit up, Allen said last year.
