Former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Hints At Political Future

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is dropping a few hints about his political future, which may lead him to Sacramento.

"I wasn't the smartest mayor in LA history, but I did have the best staff," said Villaraigosa during a Town Hall Los Angeles luncheon.

No mayor of Los Angeles has ever been elected governor of California but not for lack of trying.

Both Tom Bradley and Richard Riordan ran but weren't elected.

While Villaraigosa would not directly state that he plans to run, he did say, "I've been pretty clear. I still have a lot of service in me. I loved being mayor of Los Angeles."

It was unclear if or when Villaraigosa planned on making an official announcement.

"For now, I'm not planning on making any announcements. I think people are kind of focused on another election and it's the presidential election," he said.

He did say, however, "maybe sometime this year that we will know one way or another."

The exchange occurred on the 51st floor of the City Club Los Angeles, where the view is seemingly endless.

Villaraigosa did make one announcement official: he's plans to wed Patricia Govea, who he has been with for a year.
