Forecasters: Temperatures Unusually Cool For September, But It Won't Last
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — If the weather seems unusually cool for September, you aren't alone – temperatures are indeed down a few degrees for August and the beginning of September.
Thursday's high for the Los Angeles area was forecast at 75 degrees, a big difference from last year's observed high on the same day at 101 degrees. Temperatures in Los Angeles for the first week of September have averaged at 79.4 degrees, while the average for September 2015 was 88.3, according to the National Weather Service.
"It's still one of our summer months, overall," National Weather Service specialist Stuart Seto said.
Most years, September temperatures hover in the 90-degree range, keeping students in shorts as the school year gets underway and occasionally causing problems when classroom air conditioners give out.
But, the cooler weather isn't expected to last too long – climatologists expect temperatures to go above normal starting in October and through the winter, Seto said.
El Niño's counterpart, the dreaded La Niña, was also expected this winter, but that watch was discontinued Thursday, Seto said.
"We were looking for La Niña for develop, but it doesn't look like it's happening, so it looks like [this winter] will be neutral," he said.
