Forbath's 51-Yard FG Wins It For UCLA

PASADENA, Calif. (AP)—Kai Forbath, making the most of a second opportunity and a favorable instant replay call, kicked a 51-yard field goal on the game's final play, giving UCLA a 17-14 victory over Oregon State on Saturday.

Forbath, a senior who has made 10 of 13 field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards, was wide left on a 46-yarder with 1:17 remaining. But after an Oregon State punt, the Bruins moved from their 17-yard line to the Beavers' 34 before Forbath's winner.

Richard Brehaut's 12-yard pass to Randall Carroll put UCLA in position for the kick. That play began with 4 seconds left, and the officials originally ruled that Carroll didn't get out of bounds before time expired. But the Bruins challenged the call and won, getting 1 second to play. That's all Forbath needed.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bruins (4-5, 2-4 Pac-10), who had been outscored 124-42 in those losses. The Beavers (4-4, 3-2) were coming off a 35-7 victory over California, which beat the Bruins by the same score three weeks earlier to begin their losing streak.

The Bruins got the ball for the last time with 48 seconds left. Brehaut, a sophomore making his fourth career start, completed 4-of-6 passes for 37 yards on the final drive.

Brehaut finished 13-of-19 for 127 yards with one interception, and rushed for 61 yards on 18 carries including 21 yards in losses on three sacks. Johnathan Franklin gained 100 yards on 23 carries for the Bruins.

Oregon State's Ryan Katz, who grew up in nearby Santa Monica and attended every UCLA home game while in high school, completed 18-of-26 passes for 164 yards and one interception. Jacquizz Rogers, who entered as the 14th-leading rusher in the country, was held to 63 yards on 14 carries.

The Beavers took a 14-7 lead on a 22-yard run by Markus Wheaton, capping an 80-yard, nine-play drive to begin the second half. UCLA tied it later in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Franklin, capping a 70-yard, 20-play drive that ate up nearly 9 1/2 minutes.

James Dockery intercepted Brehaut's pass for the game's only turnover at the Oregon State 46-yard line in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Beavers couldn't take advantage. UCLA then moved from its 12 to the Beavers' 22 before Brehaut was thrown for a 3-yard loss and then sacked by Stephen Paea for a 12-yard loss to push the Bruins out of field goal range.

UCLA took a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard run by Brehaut, capping a 72-yard drive on eight rushing plays following the opening kickoff. Oregon State got even on its second possession, scoring on a 28-yard pass from Katz to Joe Halahuni to complete a 76-yard, four-play drive aided by a personal foul penalty against David Carter.

Forbath was wide right on a 49-yarder with 8:13 left in the second quarter. Oregon State then moved to the UCLA 19 before Katz was sacked for a 13-yard loss by Jordan Zumwalt on a third-and-4 play, pushing the Beavers out of field goal range.
