For Throwback Thursday, CBS Releases Original Press Release Announcing Beatles On Sullivan
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — In honor of "Throwback Thursday," CBS today released a copy of the original press release announcing the Beatles first televised appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
The release, dated Feb. 5, 1964, discussed the Beatles' highly-anticipated "Sullivan" appearance four days later.
The announcement said the Beatles planned to sing America's current #1 song, "I Want to Hold Your Hand."
The release (to see it, click here) also mentioned other guests slated to appear on the program, including husband-and-wife comedy team Mitzi McCall and Charlie Brill and the tumbling act, Wells and the Four Fays.
They joined previously announced guests impressionist Frank Gorshin (later "Batman" villain The Riddler) and Broadway singer Georgia Brown with 37 members of the cast of "Oliver!"
The announcement went on to say the Beatles would be appearing on three successive "Sullivan" shows including Feb. 9 (live from NY), Feb. 16 (live from Michael Beach) and Feb. 23 (on tape).
This Sunday at 3:30 p.m., CBS News is hosting a live webcast in honor of the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles' first U.S. performance on "Sullivan."
