Flooding Shuts Down Freeway, Roads In Sun Valley

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Severe flooding Wednesday along the Golden State (5) Freeway forced the closure of the southbound side of the freeway, authorities said.

The four and five lanes of the 5 Freeway at Sheldon Street and first four lanes on the northbound 5 were closed until further notice due to flooding, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Bishop.

CBS2's Amber Lee reporting from the CBS2/KCAL9 Mobile Weather Lab saw at least eight cars trapped in water at an intersection on Tuxford Street just south of the freeway.

The closures followed a burst of heavy rains in the area starting in late morning and continuing through the early afternoon.

"The intersection looked more like a lake," she reported.

One North Hollywood family was pulled to safety by firefighters when their car got stranded.

The man, his wife and their 8-year-old son were in the vehicle when their engine stalled.

"I didn't think the water was that deep, at first,  and cars started passing past me,     and the water was splashing all over me and that's when the car stalled,  and the water kept getting deeper and deeper, quickly. I'm used to seeing this happen on TV, but never thought it would happen to me," said Luis Paz.
