Heavy Downpour Floods Intersections, Strands Cars In Torrance

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Heavy downpour caused problems in the South Bay, where several intersections had flooded due to flash flooding.

Inches of water were visible up to the doors of vehicles and beyond in Torrance, where a flash-flood warning had been issued by the National Weather Service late Tuesday afternoon.

The alert for south central Los Angeles County warned of present and imminent flooding and expired at 6:45 p.m.

The flash flooding at its peak stalled several vehicles, prompting law enforcement officials to rescue motorists and close several intersections.

The rain also caused damage to some businesses, including at a fabric plant.

"It was that quick," said Niyant Mehta. "In the 10-minute span, heavy rain."

Although road closures were lifted soon after the alert expired, authorities warned drivers to avoid areas where deep puddles of water were visible.
