Fisher Named LA's 'Sportsman Of The Year'

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Lakers star Derek Fisher will receive the prestigious 2010 Sportsman of the Year award during the sixth annual LA Sports Awards, which will be held on Thursday, February 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.

The Sportsman award is given to the local male athlete whose performance and character best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship during the calendar year.

A true sportsman both on and off the court, Fisher is as consistent with his service to the community as he is with his signature game-winning baskets. It was Fisher's crucial late-game heroics, most notably in Games 3 and 7 that helped the Lakers beat Boston in the 2010 NBA Finals.

Off the court, the 14-year veteran and five-time champion is an active participant in Lakers Youth Foundation charitable endeavors. A longtime fan favorite, "D-Fish" currently serves as the President of the NBA Players Association.

The awards show will be televised on FSN Prime Ticket (initial airing will be on Feb. 25) and will include special appearances by many of the athletes and coaches whose achievements helped make 2010 such a memorable year in sports.

In addition to the Sportsman award, the ceremony also will feature a countdown of the Top 10 moments for 2010 as selected by a blue-ribbon media panel, along with the naming of the Sportswoman, Coach, and Sports Executive of the Year.

Beginning January 10, through online balloting at www.lasports.org, Southern California sports fans can select the greatest moments of 2010 in 14 different award categories. Voting takes place through January 31; winners will be revealed during the awards festivities.

The event program includes a dinner, followed by the award presentations and video highlights. Winners will receive awards specially created by Tiffany & Co. for the occasion.

The L.A. Sports Council is a non-profit organization and will utilize the event's proceeds to further its mission of promoting economic development through sports in Southern California.

For dinner ticket information, contact Monica Maldonado at (213) 482-6352 or visit www.lasports.org.
