Home under renovation in Venice destroyed, four others damaged in major emergency fire
A major emergency blaze destroyed one home that was being renovated and damaged several others in Venice before firefighters were got control of the flames.
The fire was first reported at 10:44 p.m. Sunday at 421 Carroll Canal, along the Venice Canals. The blaze was declared out just after midnight, thanks to the more than 100 firefighters dispatched to battle it, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A total of five homes were damaged, Stewart said. The three-story home that was being renovated was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived and has been declared a total loss, along with one of the neighboring homes.
Three others were damaged to the eaves from ember cast, she said.
No injuries were reported. It's not immediately known how many people were displaced by the fire.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several hours to keep a watch for hot spots, and their trucks are expected to impact traffic on the narrow street.
Arson investigators are responding to the scene per protocol for an incident of this scale, Stewart said.
