Firefighters Battle Hot Spots Along 405 Freeway
BEL AIR (CBS) — A 10-acre brush fire that scorched the side of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Bel Air Saturday apparently sprang back to life Sunday, forcing firefighters to return and close one northbound lane over Sepulveda Pass.
Motorists driving through the pass called in to report that smoke was rising from a freeway road cut just before 7 a.m., California Highway Patrol dispatchers said.
The right lane of the five-lane northbound freeway was blocked off just north of the Getty Center interchange at the request of Los Angeles city firefighters at 7:15.
At the same location 14 hours earlier, a fire broke out along the freeway and burned uphill to a hilltop just east of the freeway and north of the Bel Air Crest underpass.
That fire was reported at 5:01 p.m. Saturday along the northbound 405 Freeway at Getty Center Drive. That fire burned close to one house, but it was protected by some of the 271 firefighters who were rushed to the scene, said Devin Gales of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Water-dropping helicopters helped douse the fire by 7:30 p.m., he said, and no injuries were reported.
Details about Sunday's firefight were not available from the fire department.
