Fire Damages Building At LA Mormon Temple
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Arson investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that badly damaged a building under construction at the nation's second-largest Mormon temple.
Authorities said the blaze was reported just after 1 a.m. Tuesday in a 4,000-square-foot building under construction at the Los Angeles California Temple, at 10777 Santa Monica Blvd.
It took 48 firefighters less than a half-hour to douse the flames, according to Fire Department spokesman Matt Spence.
Fire officials said no other structures were damaged and no one was injured.
Because the blaze occurred on church property, the Fire Department's special house of worship arson task force was called in to investigate, Spence said.
The 257-foot high temple, which sits on a 13-acre property, was the first built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
