Fiery 5-Car Crash On Santa Monica Freeway
WEST LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A car that had been reportedly weaving at high speeds on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway apparently triggered a fiery five-car crash in West Los Angeles Saturday.
Minutes before the accident, that happened at 12:49 p.m., several motorists had reported a small, white BMW driving dangerously on the westbound 10 freeway, a half mile west of the San Diego (405) Freeway interchange.
CHP officer Crystal Carter said the crash was at the Bundy Drive interchange, near the Santa Monica city limits.
Carter said witnesses at the scene identified one of the cars as the "weaving" vehicle, but officers were still determining what happened. One of the cars involved came to a rest in the number one lane, the other cars were in the number four and five lanes, and a street light and pole had been knocked down onto the freeway, CHP officers at the scene said.
It was also not immediately known how many people were injured in the crash, Carter said.
Westbound traffic on Interstate 10 was backed up from La Brea Avenue to the crash site, eastbound traffic backed up onto Pacific Coast Highway, and delays extended onto the nearby 405 as well.
