Fiery 2-Car Crash Shuts 405 Freeway And Leaves 1 Hospitalized
VAN NUYS (CBS) — One person was hospitalized and several lanes of the 405 Freeway were shut down after a fiery two-car crash on the northbound lanes in Van Nuys occured early Saturday evening.
The crash happened just south of Burbank Boulevard and was reported at 6:18 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada said.
According to the CHP a car stalled in the number 3 lane. Another car then slammed into the rear of the stalled vehicle, said Posada. The force of the impact started a fire in the first car that eventually destroyed that vehicle.
The crash debris was spread across the numbers 3, 4 and 5 lanes and left those lanes temporarily shut down for more than an hour-and-a-half, said Posada. A SigAlert was issued by the CHP at 6:38 p.m., said Posada.
Paramedics were called to the scene and transported at least one person to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, said fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
There was no word yet on the injured person's condition or whether the victim was a man or a woman.
Firefighters extinguished the car fire and tow trucks cleared the wreckage off the freeway. All lanes were reopened and the SigAlert cancelled at 7:46 p.m, according to Posada.
