Felony Charges Filed After Baby Is Burned In Barbecue Fire
SANTA ANA (AP) — Felony charges have been filed against the uncle of a 6-month-old girl seriously burned during a Southern California holiday barbecue.
Orange County prosecutors charged 33-year-old Miguel Angel Tellez with child abuse and endangerment and unlawfully causing a fire with great bodily injury. The Orange County Register says Wednesday's Santa Ana court arraignment was postponed until Feb. 4.
Investigators say Tellez was preparing a Monday afternoon meal at an Anaheim apartment complex and used a plastic jug of gasoline to fire up barbecue coals. The milk jug exploded in flames and Tellez tossed it toward the baby, who was in a stroller about four feet away.
Sgt. Rick Martinez says the girl suffered second- and third-degree burns on her legs and is in critical condition.
