Feds Probe MTA Bus Rider Discrimination Complaint
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Federal Transit Administration is investigating a Los Angeles bus riders advocacy group complaint that transit service cuts discriminate against the poor and minorities.
The county Metropolitan Transportation Authority says its bus service reductions comply with federal regulations. The reduced service has been blamed mostly on the poor economy.
The nonprofit Bus Riders Union said in a complaint last fall that MTA reductions in bus service during the past three years violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The Federal Transit Administration said in a letter released Tuesday that it would investigate the complaint.
The MTA reduced service by almost 600,000 hours, or eight percent, last year. It plans to cut 300,000 to 305,000 hours, or about four percent, of its bus service in June.
