Federal Jobless Benefits To End Saturday Because Of California's Improving Economy
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Federal long-term benefits for the chronically unemployed workers are set to expire Saturday for 93,000 Californians.
According to the Employment Development Department, 93,000 Californians will see their 99 weeks of benefits expire on May 12 because the state's economy is improving compared to three years ago.
Since March 2009, more than 912,000 people have received these benefits, totaling more than $5 billion, an EDD spokesman said.
Under federal law, the rate of unemployment must be 10 percent higher than for the previous three years for the extended benefits to remain in each state. California's unemployment rate is at 11 percent – the lowest it's been in three years.
